Dry Cleaning in Charlotte NC | Dress Maker & Alterations Charlotte NC

Professional dry cleaners specialize in stain removal and expert pressing that restores your clothes to a clean, crisp like-new look, which cannot be accomplished with a home dry cleaning kit. Home drying kits can remove some wrinkles and certain water based stains, but are ineffective in removing ground-in soils and oil-based stains.
The care label is only required by law to provide one proper way to clean the garment. Most garments are dry cleanable, which is the preferred method and is a gentler process. However, depending on how the garment is constructed, dyed and finished, it may need to be wet cleaned or washed. When in doubt, we test for the safest way to clean your garment.
The bags are provided to protect the garments from dirt and dust until you get them home. It is best to remove the plastic bag and then place your garments in a climate controlled vented closet.
These types of garments are sensitive to perfume, deodorant, perspiration, hair spray, food and beverages. Avoid prolonged contact with any of these substances, which can result in discoloration of the fabric. We recommend cleaning after each wear. Also, have all matching pieces of an outfit cleaned together to maintain consistency of appearance.
Removal is usually easier if the garment is brought in promptly with no home remedies applied. Home remedies such as hair spray, only makes the stain worse by creating a glue stain. Ink stains come in a variety of colors and complexions and might be water or oil based. Professional spotting techniques are the most effective way to remove ink stains.
While there are many reasons to send your garments to a professional dry cleaners, the most important reason is to prolong the life of your garments while keeping them looking their best. One of the properties of dry cleaning solvent is that it is much gentler than water on your garments. Another property is that it cleans grease and dirt out of garments much better than with water.

Take caution when using home remedies. It is usually easier for us to remove an untreated stain. We recommend that you bring it in the cleaners as soon as possible. Any stain becomes more difficult to remove the longer it remains on the garment. Heat can set stains, so it’s best not to leave them in a hot car all day before taking them to the cleaners. Be sure to point out all stains to your dry cleaner.

Some coats and jackets are made of bonded material. Bonding is when the manufacturer glues two or more fabrics together to produce a certain look and feel. Over time, the glue eventually breaks down leaving a puckered appearance when it separates. To see if a coat is bonded, lift up the inner lining and take notice of the backside of the outer material. If it is not the same material and has a foam backing or a mesh material, then it is bonded.

Wedding dress cleaning and preservation Charlotte nc

Here at Sunnys Dry Cleaners we recently cared for a vintage silk satin wedding dress that was stored improperly and sustained mold damage along with the more common symptoms of poor storage – yellowing and wrinkles. I have included 3 before and after pictures including the front, the back and the underskirt. It is important to note that the photos of this dress were not retouched at all and that they were taken in the same spot with the same lighting conditions before and after we restored the wedding gown to its natural state.
Front
The top half of the wedding gown is lace and the bottom is silk. This wedding gown was hand made some time in the 1950’s. You can see the mold around the neck and towards the bottom a little bit. If you click on the picture and zoom in, you can see there are little specs of mold all over this gown, especially on the silk. You can also see the prominent color change after we performed the restoration on this vintage wedding gown.
Back
The mold is more visible on the back of this wedding gown, especially on the lower right portion of the lace. Again, on the back you can see how we were able to remove the yellowing that has occurred on the silk and lace of this vintage wedding dress.
Underskirt
The mold is most visible on the silk portion of the gown’s underskirt. You can see that removing the mold did not do any damage to the weave of the silk satin.
This vintage wedding gown restoration was performed at Sunnys Dry Cleaners in Charlotte, NC.

I’ve said in the past that the paperboard boxes used in our wedding gown preservation process are lignin-free and acid-free, but what does this really mean?
Sally Conant, the Director of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists puts it this way, “Lignin is a naturally occurring substance in trees and other plants.  It is acidic.  When paper or paperboard is made from wood pulp, more acid is added to the mix to facilitate the paper-making process.  A neutralizer can be added to the mix to bring the pH to neutral, but the neutralizer is water-soluble, and the paper or paperboard can re-acidify if it gets wet or is stored in a damp area.  Acid-free means all acidic content has been removed from the mix, and the final product cannot re-acidify because it contained no acid from the beginning.”
Put another way, pH neutral boxes (not what we use) can re-acidify due to moisture in the air or contact with water. Acid-free paperboard boxes cannot acidify on their own because they contain no acids. Why is this important to preserving your wedding gown? Acidic preservation chests will cause your dress to yellow over time. Acid-free chests are one tool we use to properly preserve your wedding dress in order to stand the test of time.

Same Day Alterations Clothing in Charlotte

Wedding Dresses and Formal Wear Cleaning Charlotte NC.JPG
As a professional dry cleaner, I would like to see you bring all of your spots and stains directly to us. This way the spots will have the highest probability of coming out. I realize that just isn’t going to happen though. I’ve put together a quick guide for removing spots and stains at home from things you already know are safe to wash at home (fabrics like cotton). As always, read the care label before doing anything, test for colorfastness on colored garments and finally, I am not responsible for what you do with the information in this quick guide.

As a rule of thumb, most stains can be classified into a couple simple categories. If it grows (from the ground), use vinegar to remove the spot. If it comes from the body (blood, for example), use ammonia to remove the spot. Based on this rule we can mix up a couple spotting bottles to keep in the laundry room (be sure to label them).

What you need:
2 spray bottles
Ammonia
Vinegar
Laundry Soap
OxyClean

Dry Cleaning in Charlotte NC | Alterations Near me Charlotte NC

If you’re like me, you hope your favorite button down dress shirt will last forever. Unfortunately, they are typically made of cotton, not Kevlar, so they do wear out and break down over time. Some of the problems you commonly encounter can be fixed while other symptoms indicate it’s time to retire the shirt and purchase a new one. The International Fabricare Institute expressed that cotton button-down shirts are designed to withstand 52 wearings and cleanings. That’s only once per week for a year. If you’ve had your favorite shirt for 5 years and you’ve worn it every other week, it’s living on borrowed time so treat it kindly. Below are some of the more common problems with laundered shirts.
Here you can see the edges and tips of this collar are wearing out. What causes this? It’s normal wear and tear caused by wearing and cleaning the shirt. Also, tips can wear faster than the rest of the shirt if it’s a straight tip collar (vs. a button down collar). A typical dress shirt is made to withstand 52 wearings (and subsequent cleanings). If you notice any of these things before that time, talk to the manufacturer or cleaner of your shirts.
The picture on the right shows a torn sleeve on a men’s dress shirt just above the sleeve placket. Closer inspection shows the area that isn’t torn but rather is worn; it’s a yarn failure caused by rubbing or chafing from the elbow of the wearer. Don’t believe me? While wearing a button down shirt, bend your arm and look where your elbow is – it’s right above the sleeve placket.

Fading Stripes on Striped Shirts

Yarn Failure is most common on striped shirts; you’ll see one of the colors in the stripe give out while the other holds strong (it sometimes looks like fading stripes).Looking at the inset of the picture above to the right, you can see the yarn is giving way and will create a hole soon (I know this shirt isn’t striped, but it still illustrates yarn failure).

Glue on Blue Wrinkle Free Shirts

The shiny tips of this dress shirt are caused by the construction of the shirt. When shirt collars are made, they are glued together, then sewn. When washed, the glue is not supposed to be visible. With some of the new wrinkle-free shirts, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes you can scratch it off, but a quality dry cleaner can sometimes remove these for you without abrasion (sometimes there is nothing that can be done).

Front Shrinkage

The front of the shirt can shrink along the buttons, button holes, or both – it looks like it’s all bunched up. The cause is either not using material that was pre-shrunk from the factory or using the wrong kind of thread to make the shirt (the thread shrinks, but not the body of the shirt).

Greying

White shirts turn grey over time because they weren’t actually white to begin with, they’re a greyish color masked by optical brighteners. As you wear and wash the shirt, the optical brighteners are washed out with the dirt and stains leaving the shirt looking dull and grey. If you shirt is 100% cotton, and in good shape otherwise, it’s possible to add new optical brighteners, a professional dry cleaner will be able to give you more information.

Yellow Spot(s)

Typically a yellow spot is an oil or grease spot that’s been ironed or pressed. The oil can be from food (salad dressing is a big source) a door hinge. Typically the oil is clear until heat is applied, then it turns yellow. It’s tough to get these spots out, but most good dry cleaners will know how. Sometimes yellow spots can be caused by soap that isn’t washed out. The solution here is to simply re-wash the shirt.

Buttons

Broken buttons are the enemy of every dry cleaners. They typically crack when heat is applied to them (not necessarily from the force of the press). Some buttons are more susceptible to this than others, every shirt button is created differently. A quality dry cleaners will replace those broken buttons for free before you even get your shirt back (but hey, even the best ones miss one once and while which is why we created our button guarantee – if we miss a broken or missing button on your laundered shirts, we’ll fix the broken button and clean two additional shirts for free!).
Bring your Laundered Shirt in to Sunnys Dry Cleaners and we’ll treat your shirts right. We’re in North Tryon Area, NC (across UNCC from WT Harris Blvd), Charlotte, North Carolina (at the Corner of Tropical Delights Charlotte Jamaican Restaurant, Great Clips and Kohl’s) .

Top Fall Stains and How to Remove Them

It’s fall, and that means we’ve got lots going on here in Michigan. You can go your favorite college sports game, go to you kids sporting event, rake leaves, carve pumpkins, and much more. Now, what do all of these things have in common? They leave stains in your clothes – but that doesn’t mean they have to be permanent. The top stains we see in the fall are Ketchup, Mustard, Grass, Dirt, and Pumpkin.
What you need:
Good Laundry Detergent
Bucket
Spoon
Scissors (just kidding!)
Vinegar
Oxyclean
Access to washing machine
Washing Procedure
1. You will need to separate colors and read your care labels before you start.
2. Pre-treat any of these stains with a bit of laundry detergent mixed with a bit of water (1:1 is good) and then rub in with the back of a spoon. This puts the soap where its needed most without damaging the fibers in the garment.
3. Wait 15-30 minutes after pre-treating to let the detergent soak in.
4. Wash like you normally would.
5. Inspect before you dry. Never put an item in the dryer that still has a stain. Either continue working on it wet or allow to hang dry.
The above process will remove 80% of the fall stains you are working on. The magic here is pre-treating. For those “20%” stains, keep working (except for dirt stains, for dirt skip to step 9):
6. Mix a solution of water and vinegar (10 parts water to 1 part vinegar).
7. Test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area.
8. Soak the garment for an hour or so, then wash again.
That should remove half of the remaining stains. If the stain persists, keep going:
9. Soak in Oxyclean (read the directions).
Using this guide, you should be able to remove 95% of fall stains at home. 5% of stains will never come out. Remember to always read the care label first. If you are uncomfortable doing any of the above steps or if you lack the necessary tools, bring your items to a professional dry cleaners for proper care.
